No motor to match? Check the builder’s plate — every boat has one, usually on the transom. It states the maximum engine power the hull is rated for, in kW (and often HP too). Match that and you’re right. Buying new? Ask the dealer for the plate before you order.
Performance
On a 4 m planing runabout
Worked example: 4 m planing runabout, 20F60LFCTT (90 kg), 28.86 kWh NMC pack (180 kg), two crew and gear — 740 kg all-up. This is a planing hull, so it climbs out of the water and rides on top — which is why it needs 20 kW where a five-tonne houseboat only needs 10.
| Speed | Power draw | Usable (100→40%) | What that is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 kn | 9.2 kW | 1 hr 53 · 42 km | Loafing on the plane |
| 15 kn | 13.5 kW | 1 hr 17 · 36 km | Typical cruise |
| 20 kn | 25.7 kW | 40 min · 25 km | Continuous rating — pushing on |
| 31 kn | 50 kW peak | burst | Peak — seconds, not hours |
Usable = 100% down to 40%, how we run an NMC pack. Reserve = we keep the last 40% in hand so the voltage stays up and full power (wide-open throttle) is always there when you need it. The motor still runs on the reserve to get you home — just don’t plan a trip on it.

50 kW peak is for the hole-shot, not the hour. It’s what gets a loaded boat up and onto the plane without hesitating — the thing a petrol 60HP does with revs and this does with torque, instantly. Cruise is where you live, and at 15 knots that’s 13.5 kW — 36 km on a usable charge, with 40% still in reserve. Estimates for the example above; we confirm figures for your boat.
Built for real water
Built like an outboard, not a pod
Under 10 kW you’ll be comparing us with pod motors. The difference isn’t a detail — it’s where the motor lives. Theirs sits underwater in a plastic pod. Ours sits up in the cowling, above the water, exactly where a petrol engine has always sat.
| Typical pod motor | EClass | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Pod motors have plastic parts, as do some outboards — but on a pod motor those parts sit permanently submerged | Housed up in the cowling, above the water — not submerged in a pod. Built rugged for remote use, where the nearest service agent is a long way away |
| Where the motor sits | Down in the pod, underwater, at the bottom of the leg | Up in the cowling, above the water — exactly where a petrol engine sits. Cooling runs off the casing’s own water system, proven reliable for years |
| Take a hit | Crack the pod and water’s in the motor | Clip a rock, a ramp or a reef and the motor never knows it happened. There’s nothing of it down there to break |
| Drive | Direct drive — the prop turns at motor speed | Geared. The reduction ratio in the leg turns motor torque into thrust — more push from the same kW |
| Shifting | — | No gears to select. No forward, neutral or reverse to crunch — docking is throttle and nothing else, with insane torque the moment you touch it |
| Propellers | Proprietary — order it in and wait | Off the shelf at any chandlery. Standard parts you can actually buy |
| Learning it | A new system, new controls, new habits | Intuitive — it operates like the petrol outboard you already know. Same transom, same instincts |
The EClass difference
Why the EClass electric outboard is different
Easy
- Push-button start — no choke, pull-start or idle
- Liquid cooling for sustained run time
- No seasonal servicing — always ready to go
- Reliable marine-grade electronics
- Water-ingression resistance for real conditions
Safe
- Extra-low voltage — 48V or 96V DC, well under the 120V threshold
- Easy, intuitive operation for all ages
- Kill switch — cuts power instantly if the operator is thrown clear
- 90 kg — lighter than the petrol 60HP it replaces, before you count the fuel
- No petrol, no fumes, no mechanical fuel system
Durable
- Corrosion-resistant marine-grade steel and aluminium
- Motor housed above the water — not submerged in a pod, nothing brittle to crack down there
- Minimal moving parts for long-term durability
- Fresh and saltwater use
- No petrol smell or fuel leakage in transport or storage

Another way to pay
Spread it out with Handypay
A 60HP at cruise drinks about 13 litres an hour. That is roughly $27 an hour, every hour, forever. Switch and it stops. Spread a complete system with Handypay and pay it off for less than you’re probably spending on fuel right now.
| Motor only | Complete system | |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated price (96V) | AUD $29,400 | AUD $50,550 |
| Handypay from — per month / 2 yr | $1,355.30 | $2,330.29 |
| Handypay from — per month / 10 yr | $386.90 | $665.23 |
Repayments shown are estimates only — Handypay at 9.9% p.a. on the estimated ex-GST price, subject to approval and to Handypay’s terms. Handypay is a third-party finance provider — EClass is not a credit provider and does not give financial advice.

Why the 60HP is the top of the range
This is the biggest we build — 20 kW continuous, 50 kW peak, forward control and tilt and trim as standard. If you have been waiting for an electric outboard that can genuinely do a day’s work on the water, this is it.
Short or long shaft
Forward control with tilt and trim as standard, long shaft. Measure your transom before you order — we confirm with you.
Buying a new boat, or no motor to match?
Check the builder’s plate — every boat has one, usually on the transom or in the cockpit. It states the maximum engine power the hull is rated for, in kW (and often HP). Match that and you’re right. Buying new? Ask the dealer for the plate before you order.
Not sure?
Is this the right electric outboard for you?
At this size the boat, the load and the duty cycle all matter. Tell us what you’re running and what a typical day looks like, and we’ll size it properly — including whether a bigger pack earns its weight.
